Overview:
TGFB1 or transforming growth factor, beta 1 is a member of the transforming growth factor beta (TGFB) family of cytokines, which are multifunctional peptides that regulate proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, migration, and other functions in many cell types. High levels of TGFB1 protein have been localized in developing cartilage, endochondral and membrane bone, and skin and play a key role in the growth and differentiation of these tissues (1). TGFB1 can upregulate gene expression of its own converting enzyme furin in tumor cells, and mutations in TGFB1 gene result in Camurati-Engelmann disease (2).
