Overview:
WEE1 is a nuclear protein kinase that regulates G2/M transition in response to DNA damage. It catalyzes an inhibitory tyrosine phosphorylation of cyclin-dependent kinase 1-bound cyclin B resulting in G2 cell cycle arrest (1). WEE1 also maintains the proper timing of cell division through phosphorylation of tyrosine15 residues of cyclin-dependent kinases 1 and 2, thereby modulating the activity of both kinases and controlling entry into mitosis and DNA replication during S phase (2).
